We are a happy bunch of winemakers this year, we have climbed from 6th place to 3rd place in the recent prestigious Tom Stevenson Wine Report 2008. Two of our wines also achieved a placing in the ‘Top Ten Greatest Quality Wines’ and ‘Top Ten Bargain Wines’ in the report. Only Nyetimber and Chapel Down stand in our way to reaching our target of top UK wine producer by 2010!
Wine experts including Oz Clarke and Jancis Robinson MW have chosen a selection of English wines to be shown at Vinopolis in the run up to English wine week.
Visitors will be asked to rate the wines and then hear the opinions of the panel, which also includes Robert Joseph, Andrew Jefford and Stephen Skelton MW.
The wines available are, in the sparkling category, Ridgeview Bloomsbury 2005, Hush Heath Balfour Brut 2004 and Bookers Barts Bubbly 2004. The still wines are Camel Valley Bacchus, Sharpham Estate Selection, and Three Choirs Siegerrebe, all from 2006.
The tour also includes an English wine section, with information about growers, vineyard locations, provenance and how to enjoy English wines.
A recent Decanter tasting showed that English sparkling wines have made encouraging progress in recent years, while Waitrose is planting vines in Hampshire to produce its own English fizz for sale in 2014.
The English wine 'preview' runs from 8–19 May. English Wine Week runs from 24 May to 1 June.
The blends have been carried out and the wines are now being filtered and bottled ready for the summer season sales. Although a relatively small crop we are delighted by the character the wines are displaying and confident that the wines will be well received this year.
From the 24th May – 1st June we will be celebrating English Wine Week with eight other Devon vineyards. Each vineyard will be offering tours and tastings and fun packed entertainment, which can be viewed at www.devonwineweek.co.uk
Now in it’s 3rd year, the Devon Vineyards have put together a unique trail guide. Visitors can now experience a truly educational visit, both in the vineyards and the wineries, at Devon’s top vineyards.
